Akasha is the Sanskrit word for Spirit, but more directly, it means the basis and essence of all things in the material world. Spirit dolls are art objects that are easy to create from recycled materials. These spirit dolls were initially created as a way work through grief and trauma. The ritualized deconstruction of the garments and repetitive wrapping works as both art technique and meditative process. The finished dolls become the embodiment of the spirit of memory and can be used as a vehicle to transfigure sadness. These dolls are easy to create with simple household materials. Some physical dexterity is needed for hand sewing and stitching.

Materials Fee includes:
A Porcelain/bisque doll for each student to make one doll
Empty two-liter soda bottles for the base
Gesso
Strong tape-masking or duct tape
Thread

Level: Beginner and above

Tuition $135

Box Full of Dreams: Mixed Media Assemblage Workshop

Joseph Cornell is known for his special brand of visual poetry, brought to life in what he called the Box Construction. Cornell created little stories inside “shadow boxes” -voyages of the imagination – forged by assembling a seemingly disparate and random collection of objects into dreamlike miniature tableaus. His boxes address his interests in childhood, space, birds, and ballerinas.

This class builds on the idea of the Cornell box. We will be building our own “memory boxes” – poetic little “theatre boxes” that evoke the memories contained within. We will assemblage found objects and elevate those objects to a place of reverence – of redemption. This is a great opportunity to use the found objects you have been collecting to create a unique work of art that speaks from your heart.

You will learn basic assemblage techniques: how to collect, arrange, edit and attach found objects to your box. We will also cover basic collage techniques, using transparencies and photo transfers.

Level: Beginner and above

Tuition $135

SOUL HOUSES - Assemblage Workshop

Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts,

18 Shake Rag Street, Mineral Point, WI 53565
Telephone: (608) 987-3292 :: www.ShakeRagAlley.com :: info@shakeragalley.com

The symbolism linked to birds goes back to the ancient world, where birds were considered to be a supernatural connection between the gods and men. In many Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, birds can represent immortality. In East Indian and Christian mythologies birds represent the soul. These soul houses are a safe haven for your hopes and dreams. This class will introduce you to the art of assemblage as you learn to construct basic house forms that have relevance and meaning in your own world.  You will learn the basics of assemblage construction as well as plot a creative journey through storytelling, personal myth and metaphor. You will take away powerful new ideas about process and art making.

Don't be afraid of the supply list: really what you need is an old (or new) birdhouse that you are willing to screw, glue, paint, etc. and stuff to put on it. Clean out your junk drawer and/or gather up the bits and pieces that you have been collecting with the thought of doing something with it. This is the something you have been waiting for.

Material fee covers hardware, glues and adhesives, paints.
